How Important Is Off-Page SEO?

Image for off-site SEOYears ago you were able to build a website and, once it was uploaded to your server, there wasn’t a great deal required to get it on the front page of Google and the other search engines and consequently gain traffic, i.e. visitors to your site.

However, today, trying to rank on page 1 of Google etc. has become increasingly more difficult due to increased competition, resulting in more work being required to obtain that prized number 1 position or even any position on page one.

Having said that, there are a number of things you can do to boost your website rankings and that entails getting the very best from your search engine optimization (SEO) efforts.

Search Engine Optimization

There are two facets of search engine optimization: “on-page” and “off-page” SEO, both requiring different approaches.

On-page SEO

We aren’t going to address on-page SEO in this article today, which is basically doing a certain number of tweaks to your website pages and internal linking structure so that they meet Google’s and other search engines’ guidelines and criteria for a high quality, non-spammy, website.

Instead let’s take a look at what off-page SEO entails, and in particular some of the best ways to build the right kind of backlinks to your webpages….

Off-page SEO

Search engines will rank a website higher in their SERPs (search engine results pages) if it’s perceived to be highly relevant to the search query, of high quality, gives the searcher what they were looking for and a good overall onsite experience.

All of which is measured by their algorithms which are constantly being changed and updated. I’m sure you’re familiar with references to Google’s Panda and Penguin updates and the fact that many sites, not meeting those requirements, lost their page rankings and plummeted down the SERPs.

But not everyone was affected by these major updates, in large measure because those web masters had made the effort to have highly relevant, high quality backlinks pointing to their websites that looked natural to the search engines, i.e. not hundreds of spammy backlinks created by software from very low quality websites and used to try to fool Google.

So what do you do when you have a new site that you want to get ranked quickly and don’t want to fall foul of Google and the other search engines? Build high quality backlinks…

Building High Quality External Backlinks

Once you’ve got your site uploaded and indexed you can start off by writing some blog comments, making sure that you only link to your root domain / home page (www.yoursite.com) to start with.

Write about 3 quality blog comments a day until you’ve built up a base of 40-50 links pointing back to your website.

This will give a similar appearance to natural link building. It’s not hard to find good quality, relevant blogs to write a comment for by just doing a search for your specialized niche or topic.

It’s worthwhile making the extra effort to write a quality comment that adds some value to the blog rather than something like “nice site” to make sure your comment gets approved. Always “add value.”

Once you have your initial links built you can look at other options for finding quality backlinks. It’s not unusual at this stage to prepare and submit a press release that can result in getting you in front of lots of traffic very quickly and give a boost to your ranking in a fairly short time.

However, on a more long term basis, you need to think about building quality links from other properties like web 2.0 sites, Wiki’s, article directories, video sites (especially YouTube), doc sharing sites, social media, etc.

And now, to make things even more “natural,” make sure to link back to other posts / pages on your site, not just your root domain / home page.

Whilst all this can be done manually, a lot of people choose to either use automated software or seek the services of a SEO agency to help them with their link building.

Whichever way you choose to build your links keep in mind that without good quality backlinks your site just won’t rank on the first page, let alone in the coveted number one spot!

Furthermore, just one high quality backlink from a trusted, authority website, can be worth thousands of low quality backlinks. And stay away from low quality, spammy backlinks used to try to fool Google and the other search engines — this will kill your website stone dead in their rankings.
